Black Cap Basslet,  Gramma melacara, is a deep-water basslet that we import from Haiti. They are normally about 1.75 to 4 inches in size when we ship them out.

Black Cap Basslet is a very colorful addition to any reef tank as they are reef safe. Their bright purple body with their “black cap” is a very distintive feature of the Black Cap Basslet. We normally get them to eat frozen mysis shrimp but they will also accept other meaty foods. They like a lot of rocks to hide in and they can get aggressive towards other basslets once established in a tank (depending on the tank size).

  • Please Note:  Any new fish purchased from us or from a local pet store should to be quarantined.  All fish from anywhere in the wild can be possible carriers of bacteria and protozoa that can lead to an infection in your system, so we always recommend that you use some sort of quarantine system prior to adding them to your system.  If you have a fish only system and can medicate the whole system, you may not need a separate quarantine tank.  If you have a reef system that cannot be medicated, a good ultraviolet sterilization system should prevent any kind of disease outbreak.  We medicate our system for bacterial infections and protozoans, but because we don’t always hold our fish for long periods of time, there is no way to be sure all the protozoan cysts have been killed.  A little bit of prevention will save you lots of trouble down the line.

A most handsome boy. Kind of pissed off looking, also sometimes acting, but he can afford it with his good looks and cool hat

  2. Richard Thomas (verified owner)

Extraordinary diver. I have tried a blackcap basslet 3 other times from other online stores and a local fish store, none would eat. After 2 days in my tank the one from KP is out most of the day and eating every time I feed the tank. Thank you KP

  3. Logan Ballabina (verified owner)

Absolutely love this fish. Give it some time to get used to your tank, mine was very hidden and reclusive for 2 days before really making an regular appearance. I’ve owned him for one week and can’t wait to see how it matures

  4. John (verified owner)

I’ve had my Blackcap for 18 months now, and it has grown from a small cautious fish into a magnificent confident creature nearly 4 inches long with every bit of its deep purple color bright and beautiful. It has its favorite cave, but gets along fine with everyone. It eats anything on offer, including quality marine flakes. Spectacular, and a bargain.

I love this fish, and Sea Life sells them for less than half of what they are at my LFS!!

  6. Carol Anderson

Beautiful fish, nice size, very pleased with my purchase

  7. Sharyn Z Wertz

Exceptionally beautiful little fish! Just now starting to venture out of hiding for very brief periods (1-2 minutes) after 2 days in the tank. Eating well, though. Perfect size, and a VERY good price!

  8. Deborah Bleeke

I have had my blackcap for several weeks now. He was very shy at first but is now coming out of his cave to eat and look around. This is a gorgeous healthy fish. I highly recommend this dealer!
