Product Description

This Sponge is in the family of Halichondriidaeis is a small, deep water sponge that if bright yellow in color and very hardy.  Most specimens will be about 2 to 2.5 inches high and 1 to 1.5 inches wide, but smaller and slightly larger sizes are available.

Because of the depth these come from, I seriously doubt that there is any photosynthetic activity in this sponge, so they are entirely filter feeders.  This will mean that you’ll need to feed the sponge regularly, much like you would a coral or any other filter feeder.  Sponges seem to do best in well-established tanks, so if you have a brand new tank, you might want to wait a few months.

Great care is taken handling these sponges and we only ship healthy sponges that have been in our system for a couple weeks.  We’ve been handling live sponges for over 25 years and have learned how to insure that you get a healthy, vibrant colony every time.  Contrary to what most Internet chat says about sponges dying if they are ever removed from the water, most of the popular sponges that we sell can be removed from the shipping bag and transferred to the aquarium without any harm.  The exception to this would be the blue vase sponges that we occasionally offer, but all of the tree sponges, ball sponges, and frilly sponges can be exposed to air for brief periods without any problems.  After any kind of transfer, turn the sponge over and over in the water to remove any bubbles that may get trapped in crevices.

Most of our sponges have a minimal amount of substrate on their bases, which can be glued or epoxied to rocks in your aquarium.  Most of the sponges we sell come from deeper water so they will probably do best if they are not in the brightest part of the tank.

Please Note:  Any new fish purchased from us or from a local pet store should to be quarantined.  All fish from anywhere in the wild can be possible carriers of bacteria and protozoa that can lead to an infection in your system, so we always recommend that you use some sort of quarantine system prior to adding them to your system.  If you have a fish only system and can medicate the whole system, you may not need a separate quarantine tank.  If you have a reef system that cannot be medicated, a good ultraviolet sterilization system should prevent any kind of disease outbreak.  We medicate our system for bacterial infections and protozoans, but because we don’’t always hold our fish for long periods of time, there is no way to be sure all the protozoan cysts have been killed.  A little bit of prevention will save you lots of trouble down the line.

I ordered one, received two sponges. One is about 2 inches tall, the other smaller at 1 inch. The color and texture adds more interest to the tank. I can’t find these in any LFS in my area. Certainly will order again from KPAQUATICS again.

Great little sponge, about the size of a half dollar and has great color.

Ordered one and got two, thanks Ken! They were a little smaller than I expected, each a little bigger than my thumb. So if you want bigger than that, I suggest to buy the regular sized specimen. Having said that, they are VERY nice sponges that you rarely see in your LFS. One of them looks EXACTLY like the pic, the other very similar but with no stalk. As with all the livestock here at Sea Life, both look very healthy and vibrant. Hopefully these hold up as well as the red ball sponges I have ordered in the past. I would definitely recommend these sponges!

WOW!!! What beauties these are…tons of ripples, creases, cracks and crevices. Exceptionally pleasing appearance, both in form and color. Soooo much nicer than the photo!! I ordered one and got its baby brother, too! Both are just stunning!
