Disappointing

I have been reefing for 20+ years.
I got 10 lbs to seed a new 80 gallon tank.
The overnight shipment arrived at 9:24AM (Excellent!)
However, despite an early morning arrival (immediately opened) I could smell significant decay upon opening the bag.
I did the recommended rinse and hyper salinity dip for unwanted critters. I found 2 pistol shrimp, a red mithrax, and an unknown small crab (decorator?) as well as 3+ brittle stars (A bit worse for wear, but alive, a few others not so lucky.)
I had set up a 20 gallon tank for curing prior to arrival and despite 3-4 days of 2+ 50% water changes daily, the ammonia failed to drop.
The house smelled awful from the tank arrival through almost a week later, and no inverts made the curing process.
I’m almost a week into the process and at this point, I suspect all life on the rock will die; very disappointed.
Be prepared for a very large water volume to cure a small amount of this rock.
